However if you happen to be at one of the convenient points in time of change in your home or small business it is truly worth giving some extra thought as to what you might want immediately or in the long term as you settle into your property.
Some ideal times may be as follows, just moving in, having flooring replaced or changed, redecorating, plastering, having new windows or doors fitted, having an extension built & general renovations. So why not consider some of your general wiring & get it done the way that suits you without having to see to much exposed cable.
Phone points - (voice, fax, broadband router, sky box, PDQ, alarm, NTE5 master socket & Master filter sockets)
Aerial points - (freeview, freeview HD, set top box, DAB radio, FM radio, scanners)
Satellite points - (freesat, Freesat HD, foreign language, sky magic eye)

Land line phones no longer the only method of keeping in verbal contact with people near & far it is however still very important. An increasing number of UK
households now only have a land line telephone to cater for broadband connections & the requirements of having a Sky connection.
However if you do intend to use your land line for most of your calls, one of the first things you may like to consider is how many & your preferred locations. This will quite often be based on a few simple factors such as the property layout & occupants lifestyle preferences. Here are some points that may help.
It can be convenient to have a phone & answer machine at the main entrance to your property. (ensure that there is a power point nearby)
Do you want a phone in the bedroom?
Do you want a phone in the kitchen, conservatory or lounge?
If you have an office space, will you want to locate a phone, fax machine or broad band router there?
If you know where your television is going to be located & your are sure that you will be wanting to have sky fitted, its worth will having a phone point fitted in that area for the sky box. Sky will often insist that you have your box connected to the phone line for the first period of your contract.
If you intend to have sky multi room then at least one of the sky boxes will need to be permanently connected to your telephone line. (note you may be required to have both sky boxes permanently connected to a telephone line)
Did you know that many wireless phones require power to work & that in the event of a power cut will not function even though the telephone exchange is powering the line with backup batteries? This is where the advantage of a standard plug in phone applies, as it will function normally, providing a very useful tool during power cut emergencies situations.
In light of many broadband internet connections being provided through standard telephone lines, it is more than worth will getting this type of wiring right from the start. Ensure that you have a BT type master socket; this could be in the form of an internal NTE 5, NTE 2000 or an external NTE.

When having telephone wiring installed on a broadband enabled line always ensure that the cable is of good quality solid copper core wire pairs, (minimum standard of CW1308 for internal wiring) and ensure that any externally routed
cable is of external grade quality
(CW1128 or higher).
Telephone line faults, establishing there is a fault and its origin can often be vital to obtaining a speedy repair solution. However it is not uncommon for customers to report a fault on their line only to be told that there is no fault and that any problems are with customer side equipment or wiring. Whilst this may often be true, sometimes mistakes are made so it is best that you establish definitively that there is no fault with your equipment or internal wiring before reporting a fault to your telephone service provider. (The company you pay your bill to)
Once you or your independent technical service have established that there is a fault & that the fault originates from external wiring or equipment, you can make contact with your service provider to request a call out knowing that you will not have to pay the £100 or more call out fee on your next quarterly bill.
Aerials are so often not really considered until the time when there is no picture or a very poor quality picture being displayed on our televisions. So what are the things we need to consider, with respect to a good digital / freeview signal via an aerial?
Well we can start by dispelling the myth that if you want freeview you need a special digital aerial installed. This is not generally the case; all aerials receive digital & analogue signals it's really more about signal strength, quality & group. In an effort to keep it simple we could start by conducting a simple visual inspection of your current set up.
Can you see the aerial and down cables, are they in good condition?
Are all the cables & the aerial securely fixed?
Aerials on very high masts are at greater risk during high winds, so need a very good ratio of attachment to height. If your neighbours get good reception on a lower sighted aerial than yours you should consider lowering yours as well.
Are there aerial feeds with sufficient signal strength to all the locations that you want to view televisions?
Am I happy with the quality of & way the cables are routed on or through the property?
So you are in the North West region & you have an aerial pointing towards the main transmitter at Winter Hill, well the chances are that if your picture was good before the digital switch over, you will probably get a good digital picture via the same aerial after the switch over.
In fact if you have very recently changed your television you may even have Freeview HD turner built in. This means you will be able to benefit from the high definitions transmission already being broadcast from the Winter Hill transmitter without any additional monthly subscription charge. If you would like to see Frreeview HD but you only have a HD ready television, it is now possible to buy Freeview HD tuners / set top boxes from a number of high street retail outlets & online shops.
There are a few points to consider should you decide that you need to extend or renew you current aerial & cable set up.
Select a good quality C/D group aerial.
Ensure that fixings used are of a suitable quality & will not be subject to rapid corrosion.
Ensure that there is a quality / benchmark standard on the cable that is used.
If you have recently bought your television & it has a network connection built in then you should, consider running some data cable to it should in case you want to stream video to it in the future. This can add some great functionality to your viewing experience; in fact many televisions now have build in control for downloading on catch up viewing streams such as the BBC iplayer. In addition to this a large number of new televisions are coming with built in DLNA (digital link network architecture / All share, this fantastic technology allows the easy streaming of media to your television from many sources such as your mobile phone, video camera, computer & external hard drives. All this via a simple data cable or in some cases a wireless connection to your broadband connection.

In the event that you are having your new flat screen television mounted on a wall, take the time to sit down at that location to give yourself a good idea of the height you would prefer it to be mounted. Remember if the television is to high you could start to suffer from neck pains.
Satellite tv reception, well there is no doubt that the when we think of this Sky comes to mind, however Sky may not be able to cater to your particular goals in terms of the route of cables for your installation, location of the dish or extending your main sky box to be viewed at other location in your property.

There are even dishes that can be mounted in a plastic domes at the bottom of your garden.
Sky Magic Eye, the magic eye system allows the viewer to control a Sky box from any room in the house which has a TV with a coaxial cable connection to the sky box. The magic eye system is 100% compatible with the Sky, Sky+ & Sky HD. The Remote Eye is simply discreetly placed on the front or side of the television set in the other room and relays remote control signals back to the sky box.
If you have a aerial signal supplied to your main sky box viewing area, this signal can also be routed to your remote TV via the magic eye coaxial cable, this will allow you to watch freeview if built into your remote television. The magic eye system can be installed on a single remote TV or or on up to 8 other televisions within your property. It’s a great way to add flexibility to your basic home sky & digital freeview set up.
Just use your main sky remote at the location of your other televisions to watch & control your main sky box. Additional sky remotes are now available from many local supermarkets now, as well as many high street electrical outlets.
Freesat, Launched as a joint venture between the ITV and BBC in May 2008 Freesat offers 100 plus channels without any contract or monthly charge, just a one of payment for your receiver and satellite dish installation. Good quality Freeesat receivers can be bought for as low as £50, with an installation cost of around £80 inclusive of parts and labour.
The service is transmitted 28.2 degrees east on the Astra satellite which covers the whole of the UK and many parts or mainland Europe. HDTV can also be viewed using this method by simply buying a HD receiver and a HD television, once again without any monthly subscription. This is a great option for parts of the UK that cannot obtain good Freeview reception via an aerial.
